“The grass is greener where you water it.”

Today I was interviewed by the Scott Emo Radio Show. Here is the simple message I gave:

Most of us get so caught up in our business that we build our lifestyle around it. Our schedule is dictated by what appointments we have for our work. Then, we wonder why we’re not happy in our personal lives. The business has grown but nothing else.

Instead, I focus on building my business around my dream life. Your marketing, the way you bring in business, the culture you create and every part of it should reflect the way you want to live. Then, when your business thrives so too does your life.

You can have it all but it takes proper planning and upkeep.

Life is…

Life is…

Life is not about having a social life you’re proud of…

Life is not about building a business you admire…

Life is not about putting your family first

Life is not about seeing the entire world…

Life is not about teaching others what you’ve learned…

Life is not about dedicating your life to great causes that are bigger than you…

Life is not about building a community of the most interesting and creative people in the world…

Life is not about finding your happy place and surprising people with your hidden talents…

Life is not about creating life changing moments for those you love…

Life is not about bringing people together inside your home and sharing stories…

Life is not about remembering your values and where you came from…

Life is not about paying attention to every detail of everything you do and choosing to be great…

Life is not about making those you love smile…

Life is not about living in incredible places and creating a life full of VIP moments…

Life is not about making incredible friends and holding on close…

Life is not about creating experiences and sharing them with your friends…

Life is not about being recognized for your work on a national and international stage…

Life is not about connecting with your childhood heros…

Life is not about  sharing your stage with others and allowing them to tell their stories…

Life is not about surprising yourself…

Life is not about making an enterance and leaving a bold statement everywhere you go…

Life is not about learning to love your smile…

Life is about finding harmony, doing all these things and not accepting anything less.

Simple Reminder

We are all intended to do amazing things but most of us either forget or never realize it.

Here are the 5 things I remind myself daily so I’ll never forget (not a coincidence the quotes are the same ones we were read as children). You should do the same.

1. Get to know yourself, learn to love you and then share it with the world.

2. There is only one you. The thought of this still gives me goosebumps.

3. Learn to open up and share your feelings because there is someone out there as weird as you. Choose your friends carefully.

4. Believe in yourself. If you don’t, who will?

5. Don’t try to re-invent the steps to happiness. Love yourself, find great people to be around and be kind to others. Stop overanalyzing and get to work.

It’s simple.

The Online You

When it comes to your personal brand your shoes and their color send a message. Every detail sends a message. When figuring out your brand, remember this: what makes you weird, makes you unique and therefore makes you stand out. Visual identity plays a significant role in the way you present yourself to both people you know and people you have not yet met.

In the past, the visual part of your identity was the way your business card or resume looked. With today’s age of social technology, where the first thing people do when they meet you or hear your name is Google you, visuals have become an even more important part of your brand.

You must find ways to tell your brands story with visuals. When it comes to the web, you are judged solely on what people can observe. Here is something to think about: if I were to ask you to tell me about one of your friends from high school that you haven’t seen in years but were friends with on Facebook, what would you be able to tell me about them? My guess is that you would know a lot about them. Based on what? That message you are sending your “friends” and “followers” is crucial to your brand identity because that is the only message they are getting in some cases. Do you know what message you are sending?

Here are ten key tips to get started:

  1. Set a mission statement for your life.
  2. Write down your mission.
  3. Find 10 key “words” that describe your mission/vision.
  4. Set “brand guidelines” for your social networking sites.
  5. Once a week review your online presence (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and make sure it is aligned with your mission.
  6. Do a brand audit once a year to review your brand in depth.
  7. Research the platforms you use to promote your brand (Facebook, etc.) so you understand how to be most effective.
  8. Make sure that your business mission is aligned with your personal mission.
  9. Set daily activities to achieve your “mission” long-term.
  10. Be intentional with every single thing you do. EVERYTHING!

I Wish I Was Smarter

There are few things that fascinate me as much as the human mind.

We are taught that being self aware and confident is when we understand who we are and what our purpose is. Yet, science has been showing us for decades that humans are unpredictable. Our society says that smart people have it figured all out, why they think what they think, and why they do the things they do.

Our minds are easily convinced and the narrative to ‘smart’ peoples lives is mostly fiction.

We’ve convinced ourselves that the qwerty method of typing is the most effective way and we continue to build computers and devices using it. Yet, this method was invented during the days of the typewriter when the intention was to slow the typer down so the paper wouldn’t jam. So is our intention still to slow the typer down? I would assume the goal now is to use a method that is the quickest and most accurate.

So are smart people really that smart or just better at convincing themselves that they’ve figured it out? I think the ‘smart’ people have just spent more time trying to figure it out. I would argue that understanding what we know, true genius may come from the people who have decided to actually spend their time enjoying life. Because it is the one true gift we all get.

I will never stop searching for my purpose but I am smart enough to know that I don’t really know anything and the true purpose to my life may just be to enjoy it.
